I have read a few scientific news reports such as www.eere.energy.gov/cleancities (see article titled-Straight Vegetable Oil as a Diesel Fuel?). Most of these reports seem to have a negative view on running straight WVO as a fuel for diesel engines or using bio diesel with a mix of the bio greater that 5 %. I would be interested if anyone has any info/reports of other studies stating the contrary as I am seriously considering converting my 1980 mercedes diesel to run on either WVO or biodiesel.

I noticed immediately that the website you posted is from the U.S. Department of Energy. Surely not the most objective resource for getting the whole picture regarding bio fuels.
Here in northern Minnesota there are quite a few VW and Mercedes diesels running on B100 and/or WVO. There are many good websites available, to help you make your own biodiesel, or convert your engine to run on straight or waste vegetable oil.
I have a handful of friends who are running on WVO and they say their engines are quieter, have about the same power and fuel efficiency, and the cost is far lower, of course. The environmental benefit is substantial.
You may already know of these sites, but in case you haven't discovered them yet, here are a couple of my favorites:

Oh, and as far as "converting" your Mercedes, there is really nothing you have to do to run it on B100, but you should look into changing some of the fuel lines, because the bio diesel will eat away the original rubber hoses. Also, the bio diesel will loosen up a lot of old crud in the tank and so you should carry a new fuel filter around in the car in case it gets clogged up.
Good luck.

Re: WVO/Bio Diesel vs diesel as a reliable fuel
Sun, May 11, 2008 - 9:31 AMI am using a mix of virgin veggie oil and unleaded gas combined with diesel. This is not a cheaper solution except that the more oil/gas I put in the better the mileage I get. I have a Dodge ram 2500 and am getting about 22mpg. I also have slowed down my driving once I found out my ratio was 3.55. I prefer not to run WVO due to all of the salts that are still in the oil.
There is a guy in Kansas who grows his own sunflowers, presses the oil out, filters the oil and then mixes it with unleaded gas. He runs all of his equipment and trucks on the fuel and has been doing so for the last 3 years. He says that he gets twice as much mileage and better performance now then ever before.
